Free Wireless Access @ Your Library

You are invited to use the Cass County Public Library wireless network using your own wireless-enabled laptop computer. Free access is provided in all branches and at all times the libraries are open. Simply ask a librarian for a temporary username and password, launch your browser, enter the username and password, and begin surfing immediately.

Hardware Requirements

  • You will need a WiFi-compliant 802.11b or 802.11g wireless Ethernet device installed in your laptop or a laptop with built-in WiFi capability.

Software Requirements

  • Use a web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape.
  • Set your TCP client software to obtain addresses automatically from a server.

Install and configure TCP/IP software by opening the Network icon in the Control Panel. Under Protocol settings, add TCP/IP. Set the IP address to obtain an IP address automatically. Leave all other fields blank. Restart the laptop for the changes to take effect.

Troubleshooting Windows NT, XP, and Windows 2000 Systems

  • First, go to your start button, go up to settings, then to Control Panel
  • Now double click the Network Connections icon
  • Each icon is a connection on the PC, one of the connections should say wireless either in bold or grayed out below the name of the connection.
  • Right click this icon, make sure that it is enabled. To do this it should either say Disable or Enable when you right click the icon. If it says Disable the connection is enabled, likewise if it says Enable the connection is disabled and you will need to left click on the word Enable.
  • If the connection was disabled minimize this window and try to connect to the Internet, if the connection was enabled or enabling the connection did not solve the problem continue on to the next step.
  • Right click the wireless icon and go down where it says repair and left click the word Repair. After clicking this it should automate trying to flush the DNS and try to get a new IP address.

If our previous options did not solve the issue right click each of the icons that are not the wireless icon and click Disable.  If the icon says Enable when you right click just leave it alone. Again try to log on to the Internet and see if this fixed the problem .

Troubleshooting Windows 95 and Windows 98 Systems

  • Go to Start, Run and type: WINIPCFG. Click OK. The IP configuration window will appear.
  • Click on the More Info button.

If you are having an IP conflict, click on the Release All button to release the current IP and then click on the Renew All button.

Troubleshooting Apple Macintosh Powerbooks or iBooks

  • Your laptop must have the MacTCP Control Panel installed. This control panel comes with recent versions of the system software and should be pre-installed.
  • If you have other MacTCP configurations that you would like to save, MacTCP Switcher is a useful utility for storing several set-ups.
  • To configure your MacTCP, choose to Connect via Ethernet.
