It’s the most wonderful time for a good chapter book

One of our favorite things to do with our kids as they got older was to read chapter books out loud. Because books are all about stories and imagination, they are a great alternative to screen time. The Christmas season with its cozy evenings and relaxed bedtimes is the perfect time for this.

You may think your child doesn’t have the attention span for an entire chapter but consider giving it a try anyway. Even a 4 year old can sometimes become enchanted with the story. A chapter doesn’t take long to read and you may find yourself easily giving in to pleas for “one more chapter” as you get caught up in the story yourself.

When parents ask me what makes a good read-aloud chapter book I have endless suggestions, but our family had a tradition of reading The Mouse and the Motorcycle by Beverly Cleary as a first chapter book. We read the Ramona books, also by Beverly Cleary, The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis, and anything by E.B. White. For laughs you can’t beat Hank the Cowdog.
