Remembering another tough winter
Think this is a tough storm? Try the Laura Ingalls Wilder classic The Long Winter about the 1880-1881 winter that almost killed Laura and her family after deep snow prevented the trains from getting through to her small town for several months.
This photo of a train trying to make its way through incredibly deep snow was taken during that same winter.
Here also is a post titled “The Meteorology of Little House on the Prairie,” that discusses the above photo and links to a meteorologist’s presentation that examines historical weather data to determine what caused the particularly harsh 1880-1881 winter Laura Ingalls Wilder experienced and described in The Long Winter.
