Dig into Reading this Summer
“Dig into Reading” is the theme for the Summer Reading Program that begins June 3rd at the Cass County Public Library. Summer fun above and below ground will be the focus of crafts, story times, and activities at the Archie, Drexel, Garden City, Harrisonville, Northern Resource Center, and Pleasant Hill branches and the CCPL Bookmobile.
Highlights include the return of the Babaloo for all the SRP closing celebrations in July. Miss Rhonda from the University of Missouri Extension will feature fun activities, stories, and crafts during her Dig into Healthy Eating programs. The Buck Family returns with their new “Adventure in Time.” “Burrow into the Great Outdoors” will be presented by Joshua Shadwick with the Missouri Department of Conservation. Each branch has weekly story times with special crafts and activities planned to make reading fun for younger children. Thanks to our many Community Partners whose contributions help the library branches provide these programs.
Each young reader who completes the Summer Reading Program goals this summer by the July deadline will receive a new book. The reading requirements are 25 read to me books for pre-readers, 10 books for readers through fifth grade, and 5 books for sixth through twelfth grade youth. These award books are funded by donations from the Cass County Public Library Foundation and the Peculiar Charitable Foundation.
The SRP program is a fun way to include reading and related activities in summer family time. It helps children maintain and improve reading skills. Studies show that participation in a Summer Reading Program can improve reading proficiency and prevent loss in reading 
achievement over the summer months. The excitement of a new award book motivates many to keep reading after their goals are achieved.

Whats the age limits?
Hi Sydney,
Pre-readers – or birth through kindergarten age – participate by having a caregiver read the required 25 books to them.
Children able to read can participate as early readers, which may be 1st through 5th grades or approximately (6-10 years old). They will be required to finish 10 books at the appropriate reading level.
Older children and young adults – 6th-12th grade (or approximately 10-18 years old) – participate by completing 5 books.
The most important point is that no one wishing to participate will be turned away, And we will be happy to work with parents and caregivers to choose a reading level for each child.
Thank you. I am going to participate. This does not have to do with the summer reading program. but how old do you have to be for a library card? Because my little sister would like to check out her own books. but my mom would keep her library card so it’s not lost.
